We are the 99%, and 100% of us eat.

Phone calls aren't always fun, but they are effective.

This Monday, make a 30-second phone call to urge your Congressional Representatives to REJECT a Secret Farm Bill that puts profits over people, and SUPPORT a bill that nourishes people and the planet.

The Farm B
ill is a $300 Billion piece of legislation up for renewal every 5 years. All of us eat, and all of us have a stake in this bill - it decides how much $ goes to food stamps, environmental programs, corn subsidies, and more.

Agricultural Committee leaders just proposed a secret, backroom version that would cut $4 billion from nutrition programs (food stamps, WIC, etc) and $6.5 billion from conservation programs. The cuts to democracy are priceless.

Please make a quick phone call to your representative - you can find their phone number here: http://www.house.gov/representative

And here's a sample six-sentence script you can use: http://liverealnow.weebly.com/stop-the-secret-farm-bill.html

Thank you for calling, and all that you do!! Let me know how it goes.

Let's Make One Small Change - And Bring Fresh Food To Millions

Did you know that a simple, easily-fixed issue forces low-income people to buy unhealthy food instead of fresh fruits and vegetables?

Imagine this scenario: A farmers market opens in a rural community that has been a food desert for nearly 20 years. The community is thrilled to finally have access to fresh and healthy foods - including a mother that loves the idea that she can provide quality produce to her small children.

Her excitement quickly fades when she realizes that the market does not accept benefits she receives through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). She frequents the market when possible; however, she’s often forced to return to the nearby gas station mini-mart for her grocery needs. More.

At Richmond’s first food policy council meeting Tuesday night at City Hall, Urban Tilth Executive Director Doria Robinson instructed the carefully chosen participants to catalog the city’s most pressing food-related problems.

The session started off quickly. As the participants introduced themselves, they cited their biggest concerns while Robinson took notes on a dry-erase board in front of the group.

“We are trying to make a list, to really get a sense of the scope of all different issues that are facing Richmond in terms of food,” Robinson said. More.

Video: Michael Pollan, “The Farm Bill”

Every five years, we have the chance to influence the way our food is produced, our land is conserved, and our health is protected. The legislation that addresses these issues is known as the Farm Bill, and in 2012, it’s up for renewal. “It isn’t really a bill just for farmers,” says food journalist Michael Pollan, in this video from Nourish Short Films. “It really should be called the food bill because it is the rules for the food system we all eat by.” more
